Random fact – The bridge was destroyed during the war in Bosnia (1992-1995), and later faithfully reconstructed using the original stone blocks taken out from the river below. It was reopened in 2004.

Built in the 16th century, the iconic Old bridge or Stari most has a diving tradition that stretches back almost 450 years. Diving into the river from the highest point of the bridge has been a test of courage for local young men for as long as anyone can remember. Tourists can pay locals to make the dive for their viewing pleasure. Official annual bridge-jumping competitions started in 1968 and are still held each summer.

Connecting cities with sports

The Red Bull Cliff Diving Series moves all around the globe, with the competitors launching themselves from cliff tops and other cliff jumping locations in a different country each week.This week the Red Bull Cliff Diving Series returns to the city of Mostar with the action centered on the Old Bridge. In 2016, Mostar hosted more than 5,000 spectators who came out to enjoy the spectacular cliff jumping show in the glorious sunshine.

The Red Bull Cliff Diving event has been held in more than 27 countries around the world, connecting people through adventure sports and adrenalin, excitement and cheering audience.

The event itself gathered many Cliff Diving stars as Michael Navratil and Lysanne Richard. Exactly 16 divers and jumpers of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Cup are coming to Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in order to continue their competition, on 15th and 16th September 2017.

The 23rd Sarajevo film festival

Aki Kaurismaki’s The Other Side of Hope will open the 23^rd Sarajevo Film Festival on August 11.

Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki’s film “Le Havre,” which won a critics’ award at Cannes, opened the 17th Sarajevo Film Festival.

“The Other Side of Hope”, for which Kaurismäki won the Silver Bear for the best director at this year’s Berlinale, is a thematic follow-up of sorts to the 2011 film “Le Havre”.

The film premiere will start at 20:30 h at the National Theatre and a half-hour later also at the Open Air Cinema Raiffeisen.

After the screening, the audience will be greeted by actors Sherwan Haji and Simon Al-Bazoon.

Laurene Powell Jobs enjoys a break in Dubrovnik

Lauren Powell Jobs, the widow of Steve Jobs, was spotted today having a break in Dubrovnik on the super yacht Venus.

In the company of her boyfriend, the former Mayor of the District of Columbia, Adrian Fenty, she enjoyed a trip to the historic Old City of Dubrovnik. Powell Jobs has been spending the past few days cruising the Adriatic Sea in the striking €100 million yacht.

Powell Jobs resides in Palo Alto, California, with her three children. She is the widow of Steve Jobs, co-founder and former chief executive officer of Apple Inc.

The Royal Family Is Hiring — Here are the current vacancies

Are you obsessed with the Royal Family? Have you always wanted to have Her Majesty the Queen as your boss?

Then today’s your lucky day because the Royal family is hiring!

They might be part of the British Royal Family, but Prince William and Harry and Princess Kate use LinkedIn to find applicants, too.

The three are looking to hire a new senior communications officer for their Royal Foundation. According to LinkedIn, nearly 1,000 people have already applied, with almost 50 applicants in the past day alone. About half of applicants appear to be in the London area, according to the career networking website. The position is a mid-senior-level full-time job-based in London. The listing states that applicants should have “extensive experience within a marketing, media or PR office” and a relevant degree or equivalent qualification, but specific experience in the charity sector is ideal.

“This role will work both reactively and proactively to manage the daily news flow to the media, ensuring items are accurately and positively reported and received by audiences via traditional, digital and social media,” the listing says.

Considering the job involves the Royal Family, the position also requires the right person who can handle sensitive information with discretion.

Catholic Church and the Franciscan Monastery in Mostar

Today the Catholic Church and the Franciscan Monastery in Mostar stand together as one the most beautiful architecture examples. Originally this complex was built in 1866. during the Ottoman rule.

In case you have missed it, see our previous post about the history behind the Catholic Church and the Franciscan Monastery in Mostar.

Today the bell tower of the church is the highest construction in the city, boosting 107m of height. The view from the top of the tower is truly magnificent, showing the whole panorama of the Mostar.

This complex boasts a library with 50,000 ancient western and eastern scriptures and books. It is the largest library of such characteristics in Herzegovina and this region. In the monastery there is also an important collection of paintings by Italian masters of the XVI and XVII century, and also works from modern artists.

Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque

Today the iconic Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque is probably among the most famous symbols of Mostar. It`s the second largest mosque in Mostar, situated on the left bank of the Neretva river, just about 150 meters north of the Old Bridge.

The entrance leads to the beautiful courtyard where you can enjoy the colorful garden, shops, restaurant and Šadrvan fountain. The concept of building Šadrvan comes from the Persian culture and it was brought to Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Ottoman rule. Visitors can enter the mosque and enjoy the unique architectural features of the Ottoman style. The most important element in the mosque is the mihrab, the niche that indicates the direction of Mecca.

The mosque was constructed in 1618. Visitors are allowed to climb the minaret, which offers a panoramic view of the city.

Kriva Cuprija bridge

Besides the famous Stari Most (Old Bridge), a genuine symbol of the town destroyed in 1993, there is another ancient bridge in Mostar: the Kriva Cuprija (or the Crooked Bridge).

It crosses the Radobolja creek, a right-bank affluent of the Neretva River. The exact date of its construction and the name of its founder are not known.

Kriva cuprija is a stone one-arch bridge of small dimension and closely resembles the Stari Most. The arch is a perfect semi-circle 8.56m in width and 4.15m in height. The bridge footpath and the approaching roads are paved with cobblestones, as is the case with the main roads in the town. Stone steps enable people to ascend to the bridge either side. The floods of December 2000 destroyed this bridge.

A reconstruction project has been initiated by UNESCO, financed by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The project was completed in the year 2001.
